In addition, RehabLogic and Initiatives Healthcare signed a Memorandum of Understanding specifying how their business relationship will expand once the data from the beta-test is completed.

The RehabLogic Neurorehabilitation Treatment and Documentation System (RNTDS) is an integrated system that standardizes the treatment process and compilation of data while coordinating the multiple disciplines of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology, behavioral health, vocational therapy, and recreational therapy in the rehabilitation treatment process across all care settings. The RNTDS provides a unique approach to neurorehabilitation through a web-enhanced, integrated system that:

The RehabLogic Neurorehabilitation Treatment and Documentation System (RNTDS) incorporates current care standards as well as innovative approaches for the provision of rehabilitation care from hospital to home. There are currently fifty customized modules that address a broad spectrum of neurological impairments, and that incorporate the standard treatments commonly used by rehabilitation professionals. The RNTDS allows for the real time access and sharing of the most current treatment information by professionals, payers, and family members involved in the care process.

“We see RehabLogic’s Neurorehabilitation Treatment and Documentation System (RNTDS) as a promising product in the field of neurological rehabilitation and are enthused to be at the forefront in validating the results,” said Dr. Edward McEachern, CEO of Initiatives Healthcare. “We’re looking forward to expanding our business relationship with RehabLogic going forward.”

“We are very pleased to have formed an alliance with Initiatives Healthcare to test the RehabLogic Neurorehabilitation Treatment and Documentation System in their clinical settings,” said Dr. Paul Domitor, President and Co-founder of RehabLogic. “Their patient-focused model is an ideal environment with which to test and validate our integrated treatment system. We look forward to collaborating with IHL to refine and enhance the RNTDS for the benefit of patients, their families and other stakeholders in the treatment process.”

Florence Community Healthcare officials were aiming for “substantial completion” of their renovations of the former Central Arizona Medical Center earlier this week. They plan to ask the town of Florence for a Certificate of Occupancy next week.

From there, the grand opening will still be several weeks away while the hospital at 450 W. Adamsville Road awaits two key state inspections. Because of the state’s budget woes, a staff of what was once eight medical facility inspectors is now down to just two, hospital official Gary Faulkner told the Florence Woman’s Club last week.

The hospital hopes to welcome an inspection from the Arizona Department of Health Services architecture office toward the end of this month, followed by an inspection from the ADHS licensing services around the second week of May.

24/7 care

Faulkner said the hospital will have MDs on staff around the clock, not physician’s assistants or nurse practitioners. There will be MDs called “hospitalists” who will check on inpatients around the clock.

All nurses will be RNs, as opposed to LPNs. The hospital received 34 more applications from RNs than they had positions, so the hospital was able to hire good candidates, Faulkner said.
He said the hospital is planning around-the-clock visiting hours seven days a week because of local shift work.

Del Webb built the facility in 1976 for Pinal County. Then-county administrator Jay Bateman had it built way above the standards applicable at that time. In just one example, the building has aluminum racks above the acoustical ceiling for computer wiring. Although hospitals used few computers in the 1970s, they’re essential equipment today. “[Bateman] was way ahead of his time,” Faulkner said.

If the facility has any faults, one might be that it is so big for the still small town of Florence. At 90,000 square feet, “it’s really too big for the community at this time,” Faulkner said. The kitchen can feed 300 people at a time.

To make full use of the building, the hospital is planning to offer long-term care. The hospital is collecting applications from local residents interested in volunteering in long-term care, in areas such as administration, community events, the information desk, non-patient care, patient care and patient/guest escort.

Hospital owner Initiatives Healthcare Inc. (IHI) has learned the top three things patients want from a hospital are convenient parking, fast service and getting rid of the pain. “Our goal is to accomplish those things very rapidly,” Faulkner said.

Faulkner took just one gentle jab at the other future local hospital. While that organization touts its ER policy of “door to doc” in a certain number of minutes, the mere fact of a doctor touching base with you doesn’t mean you’re being treated, Faulkner said. Florence Community Healthcare “wants you to get through the door and be treated in so many minutes. … We want you to be treated fairly quickly.”

In the meantime, Faulkner said it’s been challenging for the hospital to arrange for the arrival of key supplies at the right time. Building supplies, medical equipment and even beds have to be ordered “quite a bit in advance.” If they arrive too soon, they would be in the way of renovations and there’s nowhere in town with enough space to store them.

The hospital is owned by IHI of Boise, Idaho, with offices in Chicago, Salt Lake City and London. “We are not a doctor-owned hospital,” which is prohibited in the new health care bill, Faulkner told the Woman’s Club. There are however 53 physicians who have invested in the hospital and own 14 percent of the stock.

The hospital does not have a secure area for holding inmate patients. But when inmates come in for treatment, they will be secured in a special area of the emergency room away from the general public.

In response to questions from club members, Faulkner said little dogs won’t be welcome to come along on hospital visits, and the hospital will be a smoke-free campus.

The county sold the hospital to Casa Grande Regional Medical Center in 1993. CGRMC closed it in October of 1999 after major renovations in 1997 and 1999. The building was sold to Westin Financial in 2006, and then sold in February of 2009 to IHI. Renovation and construction began in August of 2009.

The old hospital on Adamsville Road is undergoing a complete transformation to become the new Florence Community Healthcare.

“We’ll have probably the most state-of-the-art physical infrastructure in the state of Arizona when we get finished in January. And we will have the most up-to-date technologies, a completely paperless environment,” Dr. Edward McEachern, CEOof parent company Initiatives Healthcare, told a lunchtime audience of Florence Chamber of Commerce members and guests Tuesday.

McEachern said he and his associates have also learned a lot about serving patients over the last 25 years.

“We know how to deliver better, faster and more cost-effective care than I think just about anybody else in the world and we have the data to prove it.”

One of their guiding principals is an industry concept known as “EBM2D,” short for evidence-based medicine, evidence-based management and evidence-based design.

They’ve studied what makes patients pleased with a hospital. They closely watch how well they do, and management receives monthly report cards on what needs improvement. Interestingly, they’ve found that it truly is the little things that count.

“We learned … if you had problems with parking, with wait times, or pain, [the hospital doesn’t] even get evaluated on how well you listen to patients. The two things that people brag about — or recommend or return to hospitals about — have nothing to do with what I went to medical school for,” McEachern said.

“We have about 55 physician-investors in our hospital here that participate with us. … We learned over the years if you have physicians integrated in your management structure it makes it easier as you make decisions about value and outcomes.

“We also know that design matters. Efficient personnel use means timely and effective care. If you do the right thing right the first time and only once, it’s better, faster and cheaper. It’s pretty simple. … What’s important is the ability to take technology that’s world-class and cutting-edge, and deploy it into a community that offers value unsurpassed.”

The hospital hopes to open its first phase before the end of the year.

Renovation and construction have already created 60 jobs in the community. Initiatives Healthcare has invested $12 million in Florence to date and expects to have invested $18 million by year’s end, McEachern said.

The company expects to hire 220 people and is now taking applications at 440 N. Main St (the Silver King Hotel).

Initiatives further intends to put some of the hospital’s profits into a foundation which will make matching grants for health care job development in Florence.

Initiatives started in 1999 doing work in Sweden in a rural area near the Arctic circle. The company continues to work there and in other places such as Kuala Lumpur, Botswana, Ireland, Finland and Norway, McEachern said.

Another division of the company works to create hospitals and health-delivery systems for universities. A third division brings health care to communities like Florence, McEachern said.

He said the Florence hospital will provide “world class care,” yet it won’t presume “to be all things for all people.” When something can be done better in a university hospital setting, Initiatives has the relationships to secure that care, McEachern said.

The company first started looking at a facility in Florence more than six years ago.

“It was pretty clear when we started coming here six years ago that there was a strong need for a hospital and other health-delivery mechanisms.

“And we fell in love with the community. … It has a lot of charm to it. I think a lot of people who live here really do appreciate it. I grew up in small towns. I understand what’s going on.”

Next month, it will be 10 years since the former Central Arizona Medical Center on Adamsville Road closed.

Chief of Staff Dario Lizarraga, MD returned to his home town of Florence Arizona nine years ago to practice medicine in the community he grew up in. His family has lived in the Florence community for eight generations. Lizarraga’s vision of one day having a world-class hospital in Florence has been realized, with the opening of Florence Community Healthcare’s medical campus in November 2009. Lizarraga has been named Chief of Staff of the new healthcare facility.

Florence, AZ, October 07, 2009 –(PR.com)– Introducing Dario Lizarraga, M.D. Many physicians fresh out of residency dream of practicing medicine at a busy hospital in an organization teeming with opportunities. And when Dario Lizarraga finished medical school at the University of Arizona and residency at Maricopa Medical Center, he also had a choice to make. Accept a position at a well-known medical center or return to his hometown and establish a practice in the community he grew up in.

“I decided to return to my hometown of Florence to practice medicine. I wanted to serve the community that had given so much to me.” Dario Lizarraga, MD said. “Florence was a nice, quaint community to grow up in, where you knew everybody and everyone looked out for each other.” And Dr. Lizarraga would know something about the community of Florence. On his mother’s side, there have been eight generations of family living in Florence, with five generations still alive. His maternal grandmother, Amelia Ramirez, is 90 and still lives in town. His family settled in Florence in about 1878 when her great-grandfather John F. Miller moved from Missouri to Tucson, and finally settled in Florence where he met his wife, and Amelia’s great grandmother.

“It is exciting to be living and working in the community my family helped establish. I am most excited about the opportunity of being able to take care of my patients locally, when Florence Community Healthcare opens, instead of sending them out to the East Valley, Phoenix, Casa Grande or Tucson. It is important to have medical services close and available to our community in order to decrease morbidity and mortality, especially in cases of emergencies.”

When Florence Community Healthcare opens its doors, it will provide the best in high-tech, high touch medicine. Dr. Lizarraga is proud to be part of this new organization. “My vision for Florence has always been a full service medical facility that will meet the needs of all the community and all the surrounding communities. Florence Community Healthcare will mean increased security and confidence to the people of our area, knowing they will have a first rate medical facility to take care of their needs, and the needs of future generations.”

Dr. Lizarraga has been practicing in Florence for nine years and enjoys a busy schedule, treating about 5,000 patients a year. He is quick to share the credit for his accomplishments with others. “My heroes are my parents who encouraged me to continue my education in medicine and my mentor, the late Dr. Oscar Moreno who fostered my interest in medicine and guided me by giving me positive experiences.
